Div 2 Match 5 – Cliff Cobra FC

Kickoff: 4:00 pm Saturday, October 8th at Point Grey Turf

For those involved with Rino’s Div 2 team fortunate enough to have known Andrew Wade today was an emotional and moving day. Having spent the morning celebrating the life of a wonderful human being we gathered ourselves in the afternoon to do what Andrew did so well – play our hearts out on the football pitch.

Having struggled to find the back of the net thus far this season Rino’s opted for an attacking 4 – 3 – 3 formation to start this match. Although we were largely in control, our first half performance was inconsistent and we were guilty of playing panicky and rushed football. In fact it was Cliff who might have opened the scoring on the counter attack when their striker somehow blundered his way through our defence only to scupper his shot hopelessly wide.

Tempers were heightened as Cliff’s defensive tactics continued to frustrate the Rino’s players. Resultantly we seemed to play down to their level and created few chances apart from a decent penalty shout from Shawn as he was clumsily bundled over in the penalty area approaching half time.

Rino’s were a bit flat to start the second half , yet to our credit we persevered and began to take control of the match. Substitutions up front and in midfield brought some fresh energy and while Greg had put in his usual hard working shift, the introduction of Francois ultimately led to Rino’s opening goal 20 minutes from time.

Following slick interplay down the left flank Francois delivered the killer through ball to find the run of yours truly. I just about managed to stay onside before firing the ball past the keeper with a left-footed strike from 10 yards.

Having found the elusive first goal Rino’s continued to dominate and led 2-0 shortly after. Despite being gifted extra time to prepare to defend a corner kick while the referee was distracted by the untimely intrusion of a Cliff player’s young child

(who had also earlier intruded to stop Cliff from taking a quick throw in) the Cliff players still managed to leave myself unmarked at the top corner of the 18. Ryan delivered a short pass and, having not been closed down, I proceeded to strike an ‘unstoppable’ right-footed drive into the top right hand corner of the net. To be honest it largely resembled Adam Johnson’s recent stunner for Manchester City against Blackburn Rovers (but I’m super modest of course).

As with my first goal I celebrated with a tribute to the sky where #11 Wadey was watching today and providing me with inspiration.

The fight was surely out of Cliff at this stage and Rino’s leading scorer from last season took advantage to get off the mark and wrap up the 3 points. Using his fantastic speed Tim broke in on goal, following another excellent Francois pass, and poked past the dismayed keeper.

Cliff’s afternoon was dismally summed up as the aforementioned keeper (already the recipient of a caution in this match) was shown a straight red card for threatening and abusive behaviour (commonly known as a temper tantrum).

All in all a good result for Rino’s on a day of remembrance for our inspirational #11.

Div 2 Match 3 – NVFC Campobasso

Rino’s Fury were back on the road for Match #3 of the 2011-2012 winter season, facing off against the predominantly Italian Campobasso side of the North Shore. What their opponents didn’t know however, was that the Fury had their own spicy meatball on hand as the legend himself, Rino, came to cheer on the boys! Rino’s men started strong, dominating possession in the early going and creating numerous gilt-edged chances which they unfortunately conspired to waste. Just when it was starting to look like a day when their lack

of finish would be their nemesis, Rino’s got themselves a break when the Campobasso goalkeeper gifted Shawn Wilhelm the ball at the edge of the penalty area. Wilhelm took two touches to make him pay; the first to control the ball, and the second to calmly deposit it into the back of the net, thereby increasing both his own and the team’s goalscoring tally for the year to 2 goals.

Shortly thereafter, Tommy Nolan managed to position himself halfway to the top of the golden boot race, as he latched onto a Ben Cougny flick, held off a Campobasso defender, and deftly chipped the bouncing ball over the onrushing goalkeeper and into the gaping net. It was a masterclass finish that will surely hold up as one of the goal’s of the season. In the second half Tommy was unlucky not to bag his second when he drove a hard half-volley towards the net which forced Campobasso’s keeper into a spectacular diving save. The remainder of the match saw few real chances as Rino’s backline held strong, and their north shore opponents continued to get frustrated. It should be noted that Rino’s goalkeeper Will Langford registered his first clean sheet of the season, and was solid when called upon throughout the match.

Final Score: Rino’s 2 – 0 Campobasso

Rino’s Lament the Passing of Andrew Wade

There are no words that can fully describe the collective sorrow felt by those who call this club home.   We have lost a teammate.  A friend.  A brother.

Andrew Wade was the bright-eyed, fresh-faced kid from Colorado who showed up in 2004 and thought he could still play even when he had a broken wrist.  In the 7+ seasons that he spent with the club, he played midfield, defense, and offense.  If he were to be asked to play goalkeeper there’s no doubt he would have done so, without complaint, and with success.  Andrew was a coach’s dream and the ultimate teammate.  He always competed with boundless energy and a positive attitude; two qualities also apparent in the way he lived his life off the field.

After completing his undergrad in Cognitive Science at UBC, Andrew chose to stay in Vancouver and do a masters degree in Visual Analytics at SFU.  He still found the time to attend training regularly despite commuting to campus in Surrey, and even in the latter parts of his education when he was trotting the globe to attend conferences and give presentations related to his research (with some time found for sightseeing of course), he maintained his commitment to the team and the sport he loved.  Andrew was the first to welcome new guys to the team, and the last to go home when we would have a night at the pub.  He was keen to help others in any way that he could, and spent countless hours creating and maintaining this very website.  Our club has been extremely privileged to have a member like Andrew, and we can only hope that the example he set will inspire others to achieve similar greatness.

Andrew may have left us in body, but he will always be with us in spirit.

Div 2 Match 2 – Wickham FC

On a wet pitch Saturday saw the match up between Rino’s Fury and Wickham FC who spent last year in the U21 division. The spritely young team who are now legally able to make use of the motto “What happens in Vegas, Stays in Vegas”, proved a difficult task for the hip replaced Rinos. It is not often you play team of kids you used to babysit. The opponents looked like a team who had played together for a while and it showed throughout the game. A notable point was the first Rinos cap for Travis Sanders at right mid.

Match Report

A slow start by both teams took a while to settle as no side could maintain possession for very long. The few chances in the first 30 minutes troubled neither keeper nor fan alike. Wickham FC started to maintain possession a little more and created some opportunities, exposing the new backline arrangement a little. Pritchard was injured partway through the first half (day-to-day with a lower body injury) and Crowe was brought on as a replacement. In the 40th minute, Wickham was awareded a free kick on a questionable call, 25 years out to the right of the Rinos net. The ball was whipped in to the short post and inadvertently deflected in as Rinos defender Evan Jones tried to clear it from danger. An unfortunate end to the first half.

Half Time (Rinos 0 – Wickham FC -1)

The second half started a bit better with Hundal, Wilhelm and Hill coming in for Cougny, Nolan and 1 other? Rinos were on the attack, looking for a goal to even up the contest but proving difficult against the fit and organized side. McArthur was brought in for Sarwal for the Furys 5th and final sub of the game. Wouldn’t you know it, but once again, the new substitution rules came back to bite Rinos in the ass with Matheson suffering a blow to the kidneys from the Wickham keeper. Down to 10 men, that only seemed to spark the “Fury” in the Rinos for the first time this season and almost seemed as if Wickham were the ones

down to 10 men. On their heels, more attacking play was developing a bit more possession was had by Rinos. Some good chances created with attempts by Martin and Wilhelm put the nervous Wickham fans on the edge of their seats. It was only in the 85th minute, when Wickham were given a chance against the run of play with everyone but the keeper pushing for the tying goal. The striker cooly slotted the breakaway home and insured the 3 pts for Wickham.

Full Time (Rinos 0 – Wickham FC -2)

A bad result in the second game of the season for Rinos leaves them with 1 point in 2 but some positives can be taken away with a gutsy 10 man performance for the last 25 minutes. This is familiar territory as last season started poorly but a great run of form showed the heart of the mighty Rinos Fury. Fans are anticipating this sundays match up:

U21 Match 2 – Norvan Saints

Rinos Vancouver SC U-21

Norvan Saints

After a disapointing loss in week one the U21s came out strong.

The team was strong from the back starting with a bounce back week from keeper Anthony, as well as a solid defensive core including Max, Mike, Ogy, David, and JCW. Everyone came out strong and were put the pressure on right away. The team was rewarded with an early goal that displayed the teamwork the this team already possess. In the second half the fact that we had a short bench had tooken its toll, and the fitness training at practice was put to the test. The U21s were playing extremely defensive and were countering the play well due to the speed we had up front. They were able to hold them off long enough to preserve a much needed and deserved W (Which was the first of the season for the club.)

U21 Match 1 – Croatia SC

Croatia SC – Rino”s Vancouver SC U-21

The Under 21 team came in with high hopes for the season being that many improvements that were made over the off season.  Most notably a  much improved staff of forwards that did not disappoint in the opening game.

Coming into the game with a mentality that losing was not an option and  the U21 squad came out swinging, scoring two goals in the first 25 minutes, both scored by newcomer Drissa.  Both goals assisted by some nice hussle from Paul.  Everyone was contributing from the back forward winning at least 75% of the balls in the air and the duece Nick combo controlled the middle of the field (Aswell as Benzar in the second half). Things were on the up and up, but before the blink of an eye two goals were scored against both on sfaap rebounds of free kicks.  When confidence was low we went and got it back, with Paul scoring again before half. Coming out at half with loads of confidence it was a couple more unfortunate goals that were scored again and eventually ended up being the U21″s demise. One being off another free kick from half and the other was an unfortunate penalty kick where they made no mistake.  Unfortunately putting an end to the U21″s first game where the second best team won.

Div 2 Match 1 – IFC Polonia

The summer heat finally decided to show up on Saturday afternoon when the newly dubbed Burnaby Fury Rinos Div 2 team kicked off their 2011/2012 campaign with a 1-1 draw against IFC Polonia, away at the Burnaby Lakes Pitches (Wait, thought we were Burnaby Fury??). The last meeting between the two teams was in last years cup semi-final when Rinos came out on top with an exciting 5-4 PK win. It was a close battle then as was also the case in Saturdays match up.

There was a splash on new signings this summer after last years revenue from jersey and giant foam finger sales were at an all time high. Season ticket sales have also increased 200% from 1 to 3,  so there were a few notables that are sure to bring something extra to the squad. Saturday saw Rinos debuts  from summer league MVP starting keeper Will Langford, Dhiren Sarwal who failed to re-make his fake birth certificate rendering him ineligible for U21 signing, Francois Clark who woos women with his french accent only until they find out his last name, Rahmtin Faridian who may be challenging for this years fastest player, on loan Evan Jones who may have the worst email when applying to try out for a soccer team (lazy_man60@hotmail.com)  and Gurjit (Gur) Hundal who was reportedly signed for half a watermelon and a conditional 43rd round draft pick in 2014.  Teammates and Fans alike are excited to see what these guys have in store for the upcoming season.

Match Report

It was evident from the start that the heat was going to be playing a major factor throughout the game as most players were sweating and breathing hard only tying up their laces. With pre-match instructions to focus on possession in the early part of the game to wear out the other team, Rinos started strong with a few chances as the team was starting find each other, learn names and gel as unit. With a 4-4-1-1 formation, it was something new and looked like it was frustrating the opposition with more posssesion through the middle.

Rinos went up one in the 20th minute after a turnover in the middle of the park that resulted in a ball being played through to striker Ben Cougny on the left side of the 18-yard box. The lone striker dribbled inside the box and with his head up, played a square ball to a streaking Shawn Wilhelm who finished like someone in mid-season form, leaving the keeper helpless and defenders up in arms over how they could leave someone with that kind of quality unmarked in the box. The half continued with better, more consistent play and never looked content with sitting on a single goal lead. IFC Polonia had a couple chances but nothing to worry the Rinos keeper.

1-0 at half.

In the second, 3 of the 5 subs were made, bringing on Pritchard for Cougny, Clark for Wilhelm and Rahm for Matheson. Under the new Div 2 rules, there are no longer unlimited sub as Dealers typically don’t lose a couple of at a time. was allowed under the CAT rules. This proved a bit of a downfall for Rinos as Clark was injured 5 minutes into the half, which forced the Sub for Crowe. Shortly after the 5th and final sub Nolan was on for Gur, Rahm suffered a knee injury forcing him to play the final 35 minutes of the half at 50%. The bruised up Rinos battled on, but were lackluster as fatigue set in (on both sides) and the game paced slowed. The team looked content to hold onto the 1-0 lead, making few chances and if it wasn”t for the strong defensive performances from the back line, the game could of been tied up. The home side realized that open play was not going to be their way to even the game and looked to capitalize on some poor reffing decisions as it seemed every 50/50 call went their way. In the 80th minute, that was the case when a combination of cheatery, yelling and an AWFUL call by the referee led to a IFC Polonia penalty that was successfully converted. Some last minute heroics almost saved the 3 points when Rahm had the chance of a lifetime with an absolute sitter in the 90th minute that sailed over the bar. It was in the post match interview the he of course blamed the bum knee.

The Burnaby Fury Rinos will take what they can from a difficult first game and look forward to continuing their unbeaten run next Saturday September 17th, 4pm at Point Grey against Wickham FC “A”.

Div 1 Match 1 – NK Hrvat

Hey there sports fans. The much anticipated kick off to the VMSL 2011/12 season finally took place last night, despite talks of a player lock out over wage demands.

It was a familiar team, with a few notable absentees and additions… So not as familiar as I would lead you to believe.

Absentees:

  • Rino’s said farewell to it’s captain, and father of the team, Jordan Haas. Jordan has hung up his tattered boots, but will no doubt be seen roaming the sidelines from time to time perving on the the U21’s that step up.
  • Andrew Wade was lulled away by the bright curries of India. He is thought to be bringing the ‘War on Terror’ to their doorstep, and has hit the ground running.
  • Charlie Carrick has taken a sabbatical from Rino’s and traveled to Toronto to recruit some actors for a feature length movie documenting his 18 goals in 18 games last season.
  • One blessing was the departure of Laurie Flynn, he won’t be missed.
  • I have no idea where Peter Bohdal went.
  • Rino’s also said farewell to it’s coach of 3 seasons, Ken Adloff. Rousing pre game talks and finishing 3rd in the league were trademark characteristics of his reign. Commitment to practices despite the trek from Surrey every week, and getting the team back on track were also trademarks, so thanks to Ken for all his effort over the last few years.

Additions:

  • Cody Levy, although not a new player, has finally said ‘Fuck You’ to his native US and opted to winter in America’s Hat. A much needed boost to our US contingent since Andrew left.
  • James Duff has stepped in to replace Div 2 captain Vincent Martin as our ‘Plastic Paddy’. He has the unenviable task of filling Charlie’s boots, but based on last nights performance he should be up to the task, and may even get his own movie some day.
  • A raft of U21 players will be stepping up this season to help us out. Much needed support, and each one of them has the caliber needed
Step Ups:
  • Haydn Pritchard will be making the move from his successful tenure as U21 coach to a berth as the new Div 1 coach. The long time Derby fan has made a move reminiscent of Brian Clough’s switch from Derby to Leeds, hopefully with better results.
  • Steve Moloney, Jordie Atkinson, and Jonathan Cooper will be stepping up to the Div 1 team from last years CAT after strong winter and summer seasons. Best of luck lads.
Now, after that long winded intro, let’s get to the game.

MATCH REPORT

NK Hrvat 1-1 Rinos Vancouver

What has 2 goals and ends up with shared spoils? A 1-1 draw. Joking aside, that’s what the result was last night.

This was a tale of missed opportunities and heartbreak, frustration and 2pts lost, but also one of hope, desire, and perhaps a brighter future for Rinos. Although only coming away with 1pt, Rinos also came away from Van Tech last night with a sense that, yes, this could be our year. Bonds are beginning to form, understandings and mutual respect growing, the pieces are all there, we just need to put them together, and when we gel fully, that puzzle, and our bonds, will be unbreakable.

Rinos came out of the blocks last night with a display that could be equated to

a dirty diamond, a little lackluster. An innocuous looking play down the right led to the opening goal of the game. A floated cross to the heart of our box was met with a first time volley which shook the back of our net, but also the cobwebs from our rested boots. And Rino’s response was almost as instant as a nice cup of Nescafe.

From an NK venture into enemy territory the ball broke to Brent Hanson at centre back. A quick pass to Ally Gray in the middle of the park was complimented by another ball slipped out wide to Jordie Atkinson, who sublimely dazzled his marker and broke down the wing. Still with work to do, Atkinson, 34, picked out John Marsh at the back post, with the finest looking cross since Jesus died for our sins. Marsh, having run from well inside his own half reaped the reward of his extra effort when Atkinson’s cross swung directly into his path. A strong header left the NK keeper with no chance and the game was finely poised at 1-1… And Rinos were sparkling again.

Rinos went into the half time break with their tails up, and duly began the second half with the belief that the 3pts were theirs for the taking. Swift passing and moving had Rinos a cut above NK and numerous chances were created, but ultimately spurned by Rinos.

It was a whipped in corner that had the NK keeper sweating like a paedophile in a Barney costume. A glancing header by Brent Hanson beat the entire NK team, but unfortunately struck Jonathan Cooper on the line. Cooper then, with a carat dangling in front of him, had his subsequent shot blocked. The rebound was met with another header from Hanson that struck the bar, and we began to realise it may not be our day.

An equally frantic spell came after James Duff was mercilessly hacked down in the NK penalty area. Stepehen Moloney stepped up to bare the weight of responsibility that has so often affected our spot kick takers. It is this pressure that creates the diamonds of my running reference, but on this occasion it didn’t have the desired effect. A low shot to the right was gathered by the goalie… but distributed straight back to Rinos. Ally Gray leading the charge back across enemy lines, striking the cross bar from an acute angle seconds after the penalty miss.

More chances came, more saves were made, alas, no breakthrough. A solid performance though and one that bodes well for games to come, in what is probably the toughest Div 1 any of us have played in.

We were brilliant at times, lacked clarity at others, but our true colours will shine through as we prove we can cut it at any level, and eventually be as a paragon. Carat.
