Div 2 Match 13 – Yaletown FC

Kickoff: 8:00pm Friday, December 2nd at Andy Livingstone East.

In search of offense, Rino”s Fury opted for a 4-4-2 formation against Yaletown FC, and handed a surprise start on the frontline to Corby O”Genski.  The move paid big dividends as they had a dominant first half performance in which Corby drove the Yaletown defenders to distraction with his skill and tenacity, while the best chances fell to Francois Clark.  The breakthrough finally came when a poor lunge by an opposing defender brought down Shawn Wilhelm in what was likely the penalty area, but was awarded as a free kick just beyond it.  With Shawn standing over the ball as if to hit a right-footed curler, Francois struck it with his left and it dipped over the wall and past the bewildered Yaletown keeper.  The Fury continued to pressure their opposition, but were unable to strike again, and entered the half-time break with a 1-0 lead.

The second half turned out to be an extremely scrappy affair, with the ankle-biters on the home team adding to their diving tactics by attempting to provoke the Fury players with off the ball fouls.  Some cautions were issued, and amongst the stupidity were some real scoring chances.  Will Langford, back between the sticks after a long layoff shook off the rust and produced a match-winning save as he parried a well placed header onto the crossbar and out of play.  At the other end, substitute Declan Hill was unlucky to see his header ring off the goalpost.  Finally, speedster Yuda Shih was brought down on a breakaway, but the referee inexplicably waved play on.  As time wound down Rino”s men dug deep and hung on for the victory.

Div 1 Match 12 – NK Hrvat

Rino’s took on NK Hrvat this Sunday in the first game of the second half of the season. The final outcome was identical unfortunately with NK salvaging a point in the last few minutes, for a 1-1 tie.

Match Report

A nervous Rino’s side took to the field at Point Grey on Sunday, aware of the hole left behind by the absence of their captain, and mentor, John Bligh. A few anxious glances were exchanged in an uninspiring pre-game huddled and then the game was under way. NK came out very strong, buoyed by the General’s absence as much as Rino’s were distraught by it. But Rino’s somehow battled on bravely, with Marek or Jeff presumably having the game of his life as chance after chance mounted for NK. But completely against the run of play something amazing happened. Rino’s managed to pretend they hadn’t noticed I was gone and took the lead after a blistering run by someone, or perhaps a cross or some nice passing, which lead to someone scoring for us.

Rino’s couldn’t believe it, they had done the unthinkable, but alas, inevitably the lead could not last forever. Eventually something had to give, and with a few minutes remaining the keeper was finally beaten, presumably a gaping hole in the middle was exploited.

The draw will feel like a loss for the guys, but realistically it is a result they would have been happy to take at the start of the game.

Rino's Vancouver SC Set To Unveil New Jerseys This Weekend

Rino”s Vancouver SC are set for action in 3 important matches this weekend. On Friday night both the 1st team and Under 21″s are in huge 6-point matchups that could well define their seasons. Victory for the U-21 squad over West Van FC could help them secure a league title, while a win for the 1st team over TSA Royals would see them be level with their opponents while putting distance between themselves and the bottom of the pack as they look to rise up the standings. On Saturday the Fury are in for a tough battle with IFC Polonia who they drew in the 1st match of the season, and a win paired with some favourable results could put them back into the title hunt.

U21 Match 8 – Croatia SC

Coming into this game after winning 4 consecutive games, the U21 squad came into this game with confidence and the desire to destroy the Croatian team that luckily beat us in our opening season 4-3. With Justin in goal, our D unit( Max, Mike, Tom, Ogy, Brent), hardworking midfielders (Koju, Nick, Bezhar, Malcolm, Etienne) and our forwards (Drissa, Paul, Zako, Alex), gave croatia a nightmare.

The team was up and ready for revenge. First 10 mn of the game, we controlled the game and had early chances; however, after 5 mn, our speedy asian messi had a break away and smashed the ball on the back of the net. 5 minutes after, our creative midfielder Nick Johnston sent a sweet ball through to Paul who just had one thing on mind:” Let me get another goal”. One would thing this satisfied the young Rinos, but noooo we went back for more. Koju, who was dictating the midfield and imposing his swag, finally got a goal when he blasted a gorgeous 40 m strike straight on to the post and then back in the net. This goal is by far the best goal in the league. Once more, our defense show their strenght, skills and built a wall on the defence. Beezhar was making a fool out of those defenders and playing with them on the left wing. A nice cut back from Bee to Big Dris who took a shot but got blocked; however, since he is so generous he decided to send a perfect cross in the box on top of the shortest man in the team’s head. Guess what?

Paul score his first header in his football career and that got him his first hat trick with 10 mn to play to the half time. Just amazing. The team was on fire. Paul gets fouled in the box, the defender get sent off and guess what Drissa steps up and is ready to hit the back of the net. A well taken penalty by Drissa gave the young Rinos a 5-0 lead going into the second half. At this point the coach decided to bring in Zacko, Nick Riley, Alex, Malcolm and Ogy to even bring the punishment to the next level. The opponent came strong in the second half however nothing to worry about because we got the best defence and keeper in the league. We just decided to go easy on them and not humiliate them so much.

But Nick Riley did not agree with that statement and hit a free kick low and hard in the bottom corner of the helpless, ugly-looking keeper net. Once more Drissa showed his class by collecting the ball on top of the 18 turned and hit a sweet strike on the back of the net. He was satisfied 7 goals in 8 games. Some more chances were created but the frustrated coach of Croatia got sent off for swearing to the ref. He couldn’t believe his young croatians were being humiliated and beaten by the handsome U21 sqaud. We outmuscled them, we outrunned them and we could see that our training was paying off. Speedy winger Malcom was all over these defenders and he finally got on the scoresheet. His first goal of the season and guess what that goal was pure class. There we were 8-0 against Croatia SC. Teams should get scared when they face the Rinos because we don’t go easy on no team. If you touch us you will burn yourself, that’s how hot we are these days. The team worked hard and is ready to take on Norvan next friday.

Div 2 Match 7 – Point Grey Rangers

On Saturday October 22nd, a day now dubbed “Vincent Martin Day”, the mighty Burnaby Fury Rinos took the pitch against home side Point Grey Rangers in front of Soccer and Rugby Fans alike. The highly contested derby (with Jericho Park being the closest pitch in proximity to Point Grey Turf) did not disappoint, leaving fans and commentators with some great talking points including some excellent goals and terrible reffing decisions.

Match Report

The game opened with a bang. In the third minute, a ball played through to Ben Cougny was received in stride and crossed with precision from the right side where the man in form, Vinny Martin, was streaking in and finished brilliantly with a volley into lower left part of the net. A great team goal and a great start to the game. The Fury continued to show their class by controlling possession with confident passing and frustrating the Rangers men who could not seem to hold the ball for more than 1 or 2 passes. The constant pressure looked to pay off when Wilhelm found himself in the box, faked a shot and nicked the ball past the Rangers defender before being completely taken out in an insanely reckless challenge. A clear penalty to everyone who was watching, but fortunately for the Rangers, the notorious 127 year old ref was on duty Saturday and somehow gave a Goal kick out of it. In my unbiased opinion it would have to go down as the worst no-call since the Hand of God. Play continued with a few more chances for Rinos and nothing coming in the form of an attack for the Rangers. in the 40th minute against the run of play, a long ball played over top and was collected by the Rangers striker. Hawk’s challenge from behind brought the player down, controversially outside the box but was deemed inside. The lucky Rinos defender escaped with his life as the referee again was hit with another sudden case of Alzheimer’s  and somehow wasn’t shown a Red card (or any card for that matter) but the penalty was converted and the match all square.

Halftime (1-1)

The second half started like the first with good positive play from the Rinos. Seemingly fitter and ready to play a full 90 minutes, chances were being created through wide play and a ton of second half corners. With the Rangers keeper making a few key saves and getting some help from the crossbar, they looked to be holding on for a draw. Not being satisfied with 1 point, the Rinos captain, Vinny Martin once again to it into his own hands (feet) to make sure 3 points were guaranteed. In the 55th minute after a few tight passes, Martin found himself with some room in the box to take a touch and blast it through the keeper who got a touch but not enough and it just managed to trickle in. Once again a great team goal. With the lead, substitutions were made to hold down the fort and preserve the victory. A few hairy moments in the dying 10 minutes put some fans on the edge of their seats but some calm goalkeeping from the Rinos reserve keeper Patrick “The Beast” Best put a stop to anything dangerous.

Final (Rinos 2 – Rangers 1)

The Rinos added to their current win streak with 3 in a row and 4 in the last 5 putting themselves in sole possession of 2nd in the league. Next weeks match up against first place MYB Panthers could see them go top of the table with a win.

15th at Point Grey Turf

The goals continued to pour in for Rino’s Fury, as they notched back-to-back wins for the first time this season. After a slow start where they earned just 1 point from the first 2 matches, Rino’s have since reeled off 3 victories in 4 matches, and are now firmly entrenched in the top half of the Division 2C table with 10 points.

Much like Rino’s Fury, Dasmesh (formerly Desmesh) FC have undergone a facelift for the 2011/12 season. After a dismal season of relegation from Division 1, the Surrey-based club have attempted to refresh with a host of new, young faces. The net result however was the same for them as last season; getting pumped by their opposition from Rino’s club.

After experimenting with a 4-3-3 formation the previous week, Rino’s went back to a traditional 4-4-2 with the striking pair of Ben Cougny and Tommy Nolan. The setup worked wonders as the home side scored 3 first half goals, all involving man of the match, Tommy Nolan. The first goal came from a nice build up, and some fancy footwork from Tommy who dribbled into the opposition area before letting the ball run onto Ben who stabbed it home to get Rino’s off the mark. The second goal came from a corner kick, where Tommy managed to elude his marker and put it to the far post beyond the bewildered keeper. Finally, team captain Vinny Martin managed to take over the golden boot race as he was first to pounce on a rebound from a Tommy Nolan shot and increase the lead to 3.

The second half saw a number of changes to the Rino’s Fury squad, as a number of players were tried out on the backline. This lead to a Dasmesh breakaway which left debutant goalkeeper, Patrick Best, with little chance to preserve his clean sheet. Finally after some more tinkering, Italian Stallion, Alessandro Pace opened his goalscoring account on a penalty which he earned with a theatrical dive, something he often practiced in the Italian youth system where he learned to play football. He then followed that up with his best Mario Balotelli impression as he antagonized the opponents, but wound up himself receiving a yellow card.

Div 2 Match 5 – Cliff Cobra FC

For those involved with Rino’s Div 2 team fortunate enough to have known Andrew Wade today was an emotional and moving day. Having spent the morning celebrating the life of a wonderful human being we gathered ourselves in the afternoon to do what Andrew did so well – play our hearts out on the football pitch.

Having struggled to find the back of the net thus far this season Rino’s opted for an attacking 4 – 3 – 3 formation to start this match. Although we were largely in control, our first half performance was inconsistent and we were guilty of playing panicky and rushed football. In fact it was Cliff who might have opened the scoring on the counter attack when their striker somehow blundered his way through our defence only to scupper his shot hopelessly wide.

Tempers were heightened as Cliff’s defensive tactics continued to frustrate the Rino’s players. Resultantly we seemed to play down to their level and created few chances apart from a decent penalty shout from Shawn as he was clumsily bundled over in the penalty area approaching half time.

Rino’s were a bit flat to start the second half , yet to our credit we persevered and began to take control of the match. Substitutions up front and in midfield brought some fresh energy and while Greg had put in his usual hard working shift, the introduction of Francois ultimately led to Rino’s opening goal 20 minutes from time.

Following slick interplay down the left flank Francois delivered the killer through ball to find the run of yours truly. I just about managed to stay onside before firing the ball past the keeper with a left-footed strike from 10 yards.

Having found the elusive first goal Rino’s continued to dominate and led 2-0 shortly after. Despite being gifted extra time to prepare to defend a corner kick while the referee was distracted by the untimely intrusion of a Cliff player’s young child

The fight was surely out of Cliff at this stage and Rino’s leading scorer from last season took advantage to get off the mark and wrap up the 3 points. Using his fantastic speed Tim broke in on goal, following another excellent Francois pass, and poked past the dismayed keeper.

Cliff’s afternoon was dismally summed up as the aforementioned keeper (already the recipient of a caution in this match) was shown a straight red card for threatening and abusive behaviour (commonly known as a temper tantrum).

All in all a good result for Rino’s on a day of remembrance for our inspirational #11.

Div 2 Match 3 – NVFC Campobasso

Rino’s Fury were back on the road for Match #3 of the 2011-2012 winter season, facing off against the predominantly Italian Campobasso side of the North Shore. What their opponents didn’t know however, was that the Fury had their own spicy meatball on hand as the legend himself, Rino, came to cheer on the boys! Rino’s men started strong, dominating possession in the early going and creating numerous gilt-edged chances which they unfortunately conspired to waste. of finish would be their nemesis, Rino’s got themselves a break when the Campobasso goalkeeper gifted Shawn Wilhelm the ball at the edge of the penalty area. Wilhelm took two touches to make him pay; the first to control the ball, and the second to calmly deposit it into the back of the net, thereby increasing both his own and the team’s goalscoring tally for the year to 2 goals.

Shortly thereafter, Tommy Nolan managed to position himself halfway to the top of the golden boot race, as he latched onto a Ben Cougny flick, held off a Campobasso defender, and deftly chipped the bouncing ball over the onrushing goalkeeper and into the gaping net. It was a masterclass finish that will surely hold up as one of the goal’s of the season. In the second half Tommy was unlucky not to bag his second when he drove a hard half-volley towards the net which forced Campobasso’s keeper into a spectacular diving save. The remainder of the match saw few real chances as Rino’s backline held strong, and their north shore opponents continued to get frustrated. It should be noted that Rino’s goalkeeper Will Langford registered his first clean sheet of the season, and was solid when called upon throughout the match.

Final Score: Rino’s 2 – 0 Campobasso
