Div 1 Match 13 – Desmesh FC

The game report started with the customary description of the weather conditions, which were cold but clear.

This week’s team sheet contained a couple of mild surprises (nothing to compare with the cardiac arrest-inducing revelation that Cooper was starting on the wing – sorry Coop, get well soon) as Rino’s own Ivan Drago, Stefan Caulfield, started at right-back. Marshy and Mcmeners must have had a falling out on their car-ride to the game, because Kenny had to put them on separate wings, as far away from each other as possible. Rino’s also welcomed Rob back to the sideline, which was just as well because otherwise we might have talked to the ref.

The game got off to a sluggish start, Desmesh looking a little more sprightly than we remembered them and Rino’s struggling to escape the general shiteness that plagued last week’s performance. We did, however, manage to score on our first attack, Laurie latching on Dylan’s through ball and doing sterling work along the left before crossing to leave Charlie a simple tap in. McMeners and Marshy continued to have lots of possession on the flanks, ably supported by Jordan and Stefan respectively, but the game settled into a generally low-key atmosphere with the help of some fussy refereeing.

Not for the first time this season, Rino’s seemed uncertain about what to do with the amount of time and possession they were afforded by limited opposition and surrendered the ball too easily and too often. This was compounded by the concession of several free-kicks which were, like Laurie’s diet (and this joke), cheap and dangerous. The rising tide of nervousness was, however, quelled on the stoke of half time when Marshy took his time to tee up a perfect lobbed pass (with the pitching wedge that both he and Charlie were credited with using in last week’s report) for Charlie to race on to and slot past the onrushing goalie. And so it was 2-0 Rino’s at half time.

The half-time break robbed the Rino’s players of their momentum and their body heat and the second half was a sluggish affair. Jeff Thom came up big with a great save from a Desmesh free-kick  and when a second set-piece came back off the Rino cross bar, Bligh did well to hack it away before any of Desmesh’s goal-shy forwards could prod home. At the other end, Cyrus was hustling to try and create something and Dylan made some great runs into the corner before getting tired and passing it back to Desmesh.

The already-flailing contest was killed by Rino’s third goal, which started with substitute Sam Chow (Chinese translation: He of the Pink Shoelaces) spotting a good pass to Charlie’s feet. The ball was then dropped off with Lenny, who thread a precise pass through two defenders, leaving John ‘Cascarino’ Marsh with the simple task of playing a one-two with the keeper and tapping home. An afternoon of uninspired entertainment for the watching Cantwell clan was rounded off with a red card for the Desmesh right-back, who fell victim to the man in black’s equal opportunities refereeing,  after questioning first his knowledge of football’s offside laws and then Canada’s discrimination laws. Speaking of The Man in Black, everyone apart from Brent, Dylan and enthusiastic debutant AR-JUNE was able to Walk the (Disciplinary) Line, and Rino’s go into next weekend’s huge tilt against Binger’s with no suspensions and no new injuries.

Three points, three goals, yet another clean sheet for Chinstrap and Hoof and fantastic displays by Nissan M-O-M McMeners and Stefan. Wadey and Frenchy coming back to boost a healthy squad unbeaten in 10 games.

Bingers…you have 4 days to enjoy being unbeaten.
Kenny…you can say it now, this is THE BIGGEST GAME OF THE SEASON

Div 1 Match 12 – CAFA United

A perfect night for football bar the fact that it was on a Saturday night and in Surrey but none the less Rino’s played out a very comfortable four nil win. Numbers were thin on the ground but it was quality needed not quantity, and we got that in spades.

Kenny again opted for a robust team with the impervious Tyler getting the nod between the sticks. Five star General John Bligh was in command at the back with his first Lieutenant Brent just ahead of him in the trenches. A blend of youth and experience was chosen for full backs with the very composed Sam on the right and Mr. consistent Jordan Haas on the left. A hard working midfield was on show with swashbuckling Laurie Flynn and the very inventive Lenny in the center.

Andrew Wade again covered every blade of grass on the right with Cory forever being a menace on the left. And it was a familiar look up front with

Mr. Hollywood Charlie Carrick and Cyrus the virus.

The match is nearly under way with CAFA 3 men down. It would have been easy for Rino’s to get complacent but that was not going to happen with John Bligh in command of the battle cry. (Did anyone see “Braveheart…”). The first 10 minutes belonged to Rino’s and in particular Andrew Wade. He had 3 chances come his way and was unlucky not to have got one in the onion sack. After Rino’s dominance for the first 10, CAFA suddenly seemed to string a few good moves together and carved out the first corner of the game, but to no avail. Brent cleaning up the mess at the back (His lips miming “not on my watch”…). With only 1 up front, Rino’s full backs were given plenty of ball, as instructed by coach and director of football, Kenny. He also re-jigged the team with Cory moving to top of the left and Jordan on the flank. It immediately payed dividends. With Charlie and Cyrus always snapping at the heals of the back 4 like 2 Jack Russell terriers, there was always a chance that they would cough up the ball at some stage. And that chance fell to Cyrus who duly dispatched with disdain. A relief to all involved. The game was all set for a Rino victory.

Crowd trouble threatened to finish the game early with one of the CAFA “Ultra’s” showing his frustration to the ref with a tirade of abuse reminiscent of Sir Alex Ferguson. He was duly sent to the stands for the duration of the game.

Half time comes with only the slightest of margins separating the teams. The introduction of Stefan and John Marsh did nothing if bolster the team. Stefan was sent on to replace Sam, who had a fine game and continues to get better with each game. John Marsh was sent in to complete an all Irish engine room.

The second half started a lot better for Rino who were a lot more composed and inventive on the ball. The mystro Lenny was on everything through the middle. With Cafa now having 9 players they decided to go 3 at the back and tried playing the off-side. Not a good idea. Jordan Haas picking up the ball on the left and sent a heat seeker over the top to john Marsh who took one touch and saw that the keeper had encroached, and sent a pitching wedge “chip” and the ball nestled into the bottom corner. Delightful football.

From here on it was sexy football of the Ruud Gullit Newcastle United era. Rino continued to pass it around like it was going out of fashion but were missing that final ingredient. That ingredient came in the form of Laurie Flynn. A passage of play that saw 16 passes ended with John Marsh playing Laurie Flynn in who sent an unstoppable shot from an acute angle into the top corner. Game over.

“WAIT, I’M NOT FINISHED!!!!”, says Charlie. Cafa already had the white flag raised but Carrick was not going to be denied his goal which extends his incredible goal scoring form, which could net him the biggest individual prize of the tournament if he keeps it up, the coveted golden boot. A defensive corner was headed away to Carrick on the edge of his own 18. He put the blinkers and the after burners on and headed straight for goal. Avoiding 4 tackles, it was now down to him and the custodian. He waited for him to go to ground and took a loan of John Marsh’s pitching wedge and chipped it over the keeper. Superb individual goal.

The final whistle blows and the away fans (Cyrus’s Dad and Jordan’s girlfriend….) are in full song. They have their money’s worth tonight. With owner Rino looking on from the stands it will be comfort to Kenny as he surely now has funds to buy in new players in the January transfer window to bolster the squad.

After the match Kenny was quick to extinguish any thoughts of overexuberence with his rescinding of the man-of-the-match award telling Setanta sports that “no one deserved it”. You can’t doubt his aspirations for the club.

So, another clean sheet for the back 5 including the keeper officially describes them as “Stingy’. Midfield is becoming more creative and inventive as the weeks pass and up front its raining goals. With players to come back next week there is going to be a headache in picking the team Life is good in Rino FC. Roll on next week. Good thoughts go out to Rob as he still struggles with his “bad back”, hopefully he will be stomping the sidelines next week.

Div 1 Match 10 – Vancouver Olympics

Ominous clouds loomed over Kensington Park South as the teams arrived to contest the latest VMSL Div 1 clash. Rinos, form favourites and especially on song in recent weeks, held high hopes, eager to avenge a loss in the season opener.

Despite widespread relief that the match had been relocated to the better of the baseball fields on offer at Kensington, Rinos appeared slow to adjust to the local, organic surface. In line with the culinary delights on offer at club affiliated sports bar, the Sin Bin, flat, fast and rubbery seem to be qualities the team prefers.

Perhaps the dirty tricks employed by the Vancouver Olympics team also unsettled Rino’s play early on? A sneaky attempt to plant a couple of spies in the Rino’s dressing room before kick-off was foiled by Ken ‘I’ve seen it all before’ Adlof. Despite this embarrassment, the Olympics squad saw fit to delay their entrance to the field. One can only wonder what was going on in the dressing room for so long, though by the look of at least one of the players it is strongly suspected that some form of steroid was involved.

Olympics certainly appeared to be pumped up, fielding a number of mid-season additions including the notorious Serbian shoe shiner of seasons past, and it was they that had the better of the early exchanges. Rino’s battled hard and managed some neat exchanges but Olympic’s keeper, namesake of old Leeds United legend John Lukic, remained barely untested aside from a decent stop from a long range effort from Dylan.

A number of attempts on the Rino’s goal were met by fine saves from man-of-the-match Jeff Thom. Bligh marshaled his troops at the back and attempted to shut down the Olympics attack by launching the ball out of danger and almost out of orbit. One clearance went so high that it almost brought an air hostess down with it. But before long the deadlock was broken, possession was lost, Olympics stole in and tucked the ball in the net.

Rino’s tried to find a response, although it was all looking rather pedestrian until Paul – in what looks to be his last game for the club – pinged an excellent ball out to the left to Dylan who played a perfect ball back across the box which Charlie finished with aplomb.

Cue Sasha the Serbian shoe shiner. A great tackle from Dylan on the edge of the box was judged a foul by referee Miro, and the resulting free kick was nicely curled round the wall and in.

The half time team talk from coach Ken was a tough one. It ended with a rallying cry to take the second half, the prize at stake: a potential move up to first place.

Rino’s responded with a more coherent, compact and generally much improved showing in the second half. The introductions of Lenny, Sam and Cory each providing a boost when it was needed. Though chances were few and far between, tempers flared and a rash of bookings followed. It would take something special to get this much-needed equalizer.

And sure enough it came. A surging attack up the right side, resulted in a corner, and Andrew lined up to take the kick. Meanwhile Charlie and Bligh were setting up a special Andy Carroll inspired move that they have surely been practicing at home. Charlie grabbed on to Bligh and waited for the corner. Wadey sent a great ball in and Charlie put that work

in the gym to good use, propelling Bligh through two defenders and against the ball which then zipped happily into the bottom right of the net. What a goal.

With Bligh’s right boot still sparkling, both teams pressed until the final whistle. Rino’s had the better of the closing stages but couldn’t find that extra impetus to secure a winner.

That’s it then for another week. Best wishes to Paul for his future endeavours, and congratulations to Jeff for his man of the match display.

U21 Match 9 – PCOV

The time that elapses between the referee’s first and last whistle is 90 minutes; and that is exactly how long you have to play the game at a high level to be successful in this league. Comebacks are common in this league and are bound to happen if you let up your intensity, even if only for 5 minutes. Unfortunately, the Rinos had to learn this the hard way for the first time this season against PCOV.

This game had been hyped up by many Rino players as it was the debut for 3 new players that Haydn had signed from the Langara Falcons squad, Brody, Anpayo and Arved. The first half lived up to this hype as the Rinos were determined to dominate PCOV on our home field. We hadn’t lost at home all year and we didn’t plan on making any changes to that tonight.

PCOV and us were well matched. The first half almost seemed like a tennis match, both teams were exchanging rallies (shots) without either team hitting a winner. It was a dangerous back and forth, but our defense (probably top 3 in the league) shut them out with Arved, Geoff, John C. and Dhiren playing lights out.

The second half was where we learned that soccer matches aren’t won after 75 minutes. About 25 minutes into the 2nd half the Rinos were rewarded for their constant hustle and concentration. Etienne chased down a ball that was just about to cross the paint on the touch line and crossed a beauty back over the 6 yard box. The ball met James, who was at a full sprint, at the opposite corner of the 6 and james made no mistake crushing the ball with this head into the net! The Rinos erupted with cheers and everyone seemed to forget that we still had 15 minutes left to play…..

With 10 minutes to go the Rino team that had just scored had completely disappeared. Their was only one team left playing at a high level and that was PCOV. Naturally, one of their players sensed this lack of concentration and effort on our part and exploited it. He went coast to coast with the ball, dangling everyone in his way, and set up another one of his teammates for a tap in goal. It was the worst feeling in the game to give a victory so close to the end, but it was a feeling that was necessary for this team to feel so that it will never happen again!

The game ended at 1-1 and both teams walked away with a point, but the only team that left hurting were the Rinos.

U21 Match 8 – Cliff Avenue United

Intimidation is usually the X-factor for most away teams. Intimidation due to the opponents size, skill, crowd noise, or sometimes even their notoriety can make a huge difference in a game. Playing our match 20 kms away from our home, against a team that already had 2 players suspended indefinitely, another suspended for 3 games, and numerous other players proud of their dirty yellow cards, intimidation was going to be a huge factor for this small, classy west-side squad.

It was a nice, clear saturday afternoon in Burnaby, but once the whistle blew both these teams were going to forget about “nice”…..it was going to be a downright dirty battle against, probably, the dirtiest team in the league.

Cliff Avenue had 3 giants on their team who were taller than 6″5 and seemed to be prime to control this game through the air. However, we stepped up to the challenge and made sure we out hustled them, out jumped them, and made sure we kept the ball away from these freaks of nature. We laid our bodies on the line and went hit-for-hit with Cliff Avenue. 30 minutes in, Malcolm got past their stopper and was sprinting down the center of the pitch, one on one with their sweeper, when he decided to hip check Malcolm. Malcolm was thrown 5 feet into the air before he landed on his hip. Unfortunately Malcolm was down and out with a bruised hip and had to be helped off the field; they had just taken out one of our key midfielders and now we were pissed. Davis, David, Etienne, and Dhiren went looking for revenge and laid the lumber on anyone with the ball. Cliff Avenue was dropping all over the field and they started whining to the referee about our hard hits, who just waived the play on!

Almost halfway through the season these Rinos were starting to grow up and players Kort sagt, The Dark Knight Rises™ ser ut som a v?re fantastisk tillegg i serien av spill og en flott fj?r i hatten for tilhengere av Microgaming casino fra og med september. were starting to step into their roles and cement their position on the team. John A, Taz, and James were one of these and finally started bringing their “game” week after week and were key in changing the scoreboard in this game. John set up our only goal in the game about 20 minutes into the second half;  he pinged a ball about 2 feet off the ground all the way from the left corner that beat the goalie and the players in the box and found James for a diving header at the far post. As soon as the ball broke the plane of the goal line, we saw the anger and frustration burning in the eyes of Cliff Avenue players and we knew this game was just going to get dirtier, harder and faster. This match was far from over and now it was time to see whether we could close out this victory and cement ourselves within the top half of the league.

The next 25 minutes were played in our half. Cliff Avenue attacked with an urgency and used their size to their advantage and kept us on our heels. Their advances created numerous chances to score, but our goalie, Anthony, stone-walled them on every shot and was determined to get his 5th clean sheet of the season.

Another key thing to note was that Davis Murton started as our stopper in place of Max and did not miss a step. Dhiren and Davis showed some quick chemistry through their ability to switch naturally between stopper and sweeper on the go, confusing the Cliff Avenues” strikers and they also successfully shutdown Cliff Avenue”s abnormally tall players.

When the final whistle blew, the Rinos had inked in their 2nd consecutive win and finally were living up to their expectations. Granted we still have a lot of work to do to get better, but rolling of back to back victories is a good start in getting our engines going.

This Friday night we play a huge game against PCOV on our home field. Let”s see if these Rinos can pull off 3 straight victories?

Div 1 Match 8 – Norvan Pacific 'A'

As kick off approached, a beautiful, sunny day in Vancouver turned grey and chilled as clouds gathered over the Rino’s home turf in Point Grey — surely it must be a clever metaphor. Inside the dressing room, anxiety grew as the Rino’s squad prepared themselves for an important matchup against the table leaders and former premier squad, Norvan.

Just when Rino’s chances looked most grim, general manager, Robert Freedman, announced that his back problems had improved! Was it a sign of better things to come?

Coach Ken

This hope these and be the working. After other hair been in and the dry answer and bit other. Now To it the one my made so even of the noticed read?

Adloff, much to the delight of Norvan’s strikers, opted for a warm and fuzzy-feeling defensive lineup, made up of Jordan Haas, Brent Hanson, John Bligh and Peter Bohdal. Throughout the game, they presented Norvan with ankle-embracing tackles, offering plenty of material for Norvan’s vocal coaching staff.

The first half was a tight engagement between both sides with several goal-scoring opportunities exchanged. The best of them came from leading goal-scorer, Charlie Carrick – he drove a low cross into the 6-yard box that was narrowly deflected by a Norvan defender leaving Charlie’s shorter and prettier sidekick, Cyrus Greenall, unable to continue his 6-game goal scoring streak (note from author: “F%@$!”). The rest of the half could be summed up with the following: late tackle outside the penalty area by Rino’s; dead ball for Norvan followed by a free kick over the net or into Tyler’s hands. Rinse. Repeat. The first half ended 0-0 with both sides unsatisfied as neither had really tested the keeper.

The second half started off with an eager Rino’s offense that delivered several counterattacks. The best came from a well-timed through pass from Charlie that a sprinting Cyrus managed to receive and touch past Norvan’s keeper. Unfortunately, a Norvan defender swept in and cleared the ball for a corner. On the ensuing play, a two-man corner led to a low, far post shot that just barely glanced the glove of Norvan’s keeper. The ball, now slightly redirected, hit the far post and bounced across the goal line until a Rino forward struck the ball only to have the Norvan keeper make another acrobatic stop.

Rino’s hard work eventually paid off after a brilliant diagonal pass from Dylan Smith that found Charlie Carrick inside Norvan’s 6 yard box. Charlie first-timed the shot into the back of Norvan’s net. 1-0, Rino’s. The goal charged up Norvan’s attack as they pressed nearly all of their players into Rino’s third of the field. Rino’s defense admirably weathered the proverbial storm and frustrated Norvan’s attack until a dangerous cross from Norvan’s wing landed on the foot of a Norvan attacker inside the 6-yard box who first-timed the shot into Rino’s goal. Score 1-1.

With only a few minutes left, each side traded chances but neither would test the keeper. Rino’s left the game with a hard-fought draw, but unsatisfied as 3 points were nearly within grasp. By the Norvan coach’s own admission, Rino’s defense “took no prisoners” – an apt description of the entire match.

CAT Match 8 – Coq. Metro-Ford Wolves “B”

10-man Rino”s hang on for victory

Kickoff: 3:00 pm Saturday, October 30th at Percy Perry Stadium

For the second consecutive week Rino”s CAT team went on the road, and came home with three points.  However, what should have been a comfortable victory ended with a frenetic finish as defender Stefan Caulfield was ejected for illegally denying the Wolves an obvious goalscoring opportunity with his hand!

Stefan actually pulled some gloves out of his back pocket and started the game between the sticks as scheduled goalkeeper Jeff Thom was late to the game.  He did an admirable job pitching a first half shutout and prompting some to question if he had actually played the position on previous occasion.  At the other end of the pitch, the Wolves keeper had a half to forget as he dropped an Adam Crowe corner kick into his own net giving the visitors a 1-0 lead.  Shortly thereafter Tim pritchard broke in from the right-side and managed to catch the keeper out of position as his cross-cum-shot (yes, I”ve been waiting to use that term all year) looped over his head and nestled gracefully into the back of the net.  The nightmare wasn”t over however, because young midfielder Corby O”Genski started a messi-like run from just inside half, took on what looked like the entire Wolves team, and miraculously found himself bursting through one-on-one with the bewildered keeper who he easily slotted the ball past.

A comfortable 3-nil half-time lead brought a slew of changes for the visitors.  Meanwhile the home team re-organized, and looked sharp to start the half.  They began attacking in waves, and were rather fortunate to be awarded a penalty on an innocuous hand ball call.  Seeing them convert the unjustly awarded penalty seemed to spur on Rino”s as the 2nd half strike partnership of Max Kaplan and evergreen Ben Cougny started looking dangerous in the attacking half of the pitch.  On one foray forward Cougny managed to beat his man one-on-one and slipped the ball into Kaplan who one-timed it into the net, restoring the 3-goal lead.  However, this didn”t discourage the Wolves who kept pushing forward looking to stay in the game.  A nice passing play and a through ball cut through Rino”s defence and lead to a well taken For Las Vegas Blackjack, the following rules are in effect:Take note that Las Vegas casino rules differ tremendously from European casino rules. goal.  4-2 and the Wolves were still pressing.  Then things got crazy.  Goalkeeper Jeff Thom had the ball at his feet and looked to pass it out, but instead of finding a teammate delivered it to a Wolves forward at the top of the penalty area!  Looking to recover the ball he raced toward the player who tried to go around him, in the ensuing collision the ball popped up in the air and headed towards the net, but Stefan had other ideas.  While we”re not sure if he was confused by his first half in goal, or just looking for a vacation from soccer he reached out and swatted the ball away with his hand!  The referee had no choice but to award a penalty and eject Stefan from the game.  On the ensuing penalty the Wolves striker hit the post and then smashed the rebound into the net.  The referee appeared to signal a goal, but amid the protestations of the entire Rino”s squad, realized his error and correctly awarded Rino”s a goal kick.  Disaster averted, and Rino”s hung on with 10-men to get the win.

U21 Match 7 – KLM Alemania

Coming off of a big loss to UBC, and sliding down the rankings, the Rinos needed a big win to cement their position within the league. It was about time we started playing at the level expected of us and it was about time we started doing our job!

Haydn’s motivational speech started a night that would be the TSN turning point for this team, this season, with 6 simple words that hit home, ” Are you ****ing ready to win?” This coming from a coach who was the epitome of composure, who never yelled or even raised his voice, was enough to let us know that he had had enough of our shitty soccer, and that it was time for us to either go big or go home!

The match started and the Rinos immediately took their game to another level. Each and every one of our players hustled for every ball, won every 50/50 ball, won every ball in the air and they punished the other team for ever touching the ball. Our blitzkrieg style of soccer stunned KLM and it took them awhile to get their feet under them. The Rinos were playing tough, fast and most importantly, we were playing smart; we started spreading the ball around and played a calm, controlled game.

The first goal came in the first half off of a huge hustle play. David went up mono-e-mono against one of KLM’s midfielders and won the battle, and secured the ball. Then without thinking he pinged the ball across to Etienne who did the rest. Etienne, at a full sprint, controlled the ball and drew 4 KLM defenders. Just as they were about to collapse on him, Etienne looked across and found a lonely John standing at the opposite corner of the 18 yard box. Once John touched the ball, he wasted little time beating the keeper by sniping it into the bottom left corner of the goal. The mesh rippled, the crowd roared, the scoreboard churned, but most importantly, in these past 20 seconds, Haydn got a glimpse of the brilliance that he knew he was responsible for.

The 1st half ended at 1-0, but the game was far from over. The end of the first half almost saw a changing of guard for the Rino Defense; for the rest of the game, the Rinos would have to play without their Captain, Dhiren. His departure left a big hole in the defense and the Rinos would now have to fill that and protect their lead at the same time. And by god, they did exactly that and more!

Max stepped in at sweeper, Petros came in at stopper and with John and Jeff flanking them they stepped up and initiated their lock-down! They stopped every KLM advance and allowed the rest of our team to play aggressive and with a confidence, knowing that their defense would protect them from any mistakes.

In the second half the Rinos opened up a one/two touch clinic and admission was free! We started showing off what we were learning at practice and our hard work was finally paying off. These string of passes set up many offensive movements and produced legitimate chances for our offensive to make the KLM defense look like a sieve.

John was on fire tonight, and netted his second goal of the game, and the season, midway through the second half and was set up by James.

Hustle was the theme of this game and our third goal was set up by nothing but hustle. Jonah started the play by putting up a threw ball for David who, at a full sprint, laid himself out to cross the ball into the box and found goal hhungry Juan waiting for a tap in goal at the 6.

Another highlight of the game was Anthony’s save on a penalty kick, that was given up towards the end of the game. Had KLM scored here, they would’ve been right back in the game, but Anthony would not have any of that! He honed in on the ball and rejected it like a hot girl rejecting a nerd. TRIVIA fans: Anthony is 2-0 on penalty kicks this season……even Jeff Thom doesn’t boast those kind of numbers 😉

In the end, these young Rinos finally grew up, and without their Captain they led each other to their 2nd win of their season. I guess they showed us that they do have the mental toughness and concentration to overcome adversity, and to just do their job! These are the kind of players that great teams are made off and these guys are just 18…..this league is going to get nasty surprise over these next 3 years!

Div 1 Match 7 – NK Hrvat

Week 7 saw Rino’s take on NK Hrvat at Van Tech turf in Vancouver at 8:00 pm. In preparation for the Friday night lights, some of the lads met before the game for a bite of pre-game supper and playful conversation with the waitress. Charlie loaded up on electrolytes, while Brent, already coming off a cold, ate what looked like three week old BP chicken parmesan. This proved to be a mistake as he had to evacuate no less than four times before the game (luckily, there were two porta-potties at

The game kicked off with Jeff Thom in net and Cooper, Bligh,

Brent and Jordan in the back line. Andrew, Dylan, Peter and Paul were in the midfield with the dynamic duo of Cyrus and Charlie up front. The match started poorly for Rino’s, with a lot of missed balls and less than characteristic defense (Coach Kenny nearly loosing his voice from yelling “don’t dive in” so many times), allowing Hrvat some early possession deep in Rino’s half. One particular instance saw Jeff give the ball away just outside the 18, perhaps just to challenge himself with an early breakaway?

Once things settled down Rino’s was able to tally a couple of notches before halftime (the soccer kind, not the “Ultra Violet” kind). The first goal started with a solid challenge from Wade in the middle, then a pass to Cyrus who took it out wide and crossed shot the ball at the net with some help from a confused Hrvat defender who hammered it home just to be sure. The second goal started with a magnificently placed pass from Dylan to Charlie, who calmly tucked it far side pass the keeper. A couple of bright periods of football in an otherwise mostly frantic game. Reinforcements came in the form of Vinny Martin before the break; Peter having had to leave the pitch briefly to reapply his mascara before returning to the game.

The second half of the game resembled more of a tennis match at times than soccer and highlighted the general lack of discipline in the game, both technically and emotionally – despite the referee giving 147 “last warnings” over the course of 90 minutes. There were a few guys shown cards. One of particular note went to Charlie for pushing a player after the whistle (although he later admitted he was just really upset about having to miss his performance in Supernatural, “Live Free or Twihard”……Seriously?). Cyrus was also surprised to get a yellow card for pretending to be Peter, a crime punishable in most developed countries and clearly outlined in the FIFA rulebook.

As the game wound down, Hrvat pushed an extra man up front, but to no avail for the home team. Rino’s made a couple late subs of their own with Laurie and Marsh coming on to help seal the deal. After 90 minutes, the final score stayed at 2:0, Rino’s tallying another clean sheet and 3 points.

CAT Match 7 – Surrey United “B”

Kickoff: 2:00 pm Sunday, October 24th at Cloverdale Athletic

On a wet and dreary weekend Rino’s SC took to the field hoping to take all three points for the third week running. Their opponents –defeated by Rino’s 4-2 in last years corresponding fixture – had started the season strongly and sat three points ahead of Rino’s in the table after six matches.

In Vancouver the rain fell heavily all morning, yet south-east Surrey seemed to have avoided most of the downfall and, as the rain held off for the duration of the match, the pitch was in excellent condition. The wind too seemed willing to cooperate. Though it had swirled viciously overhead during the warm up – reminding me of my time in Dublin where every second match from September to March seemed to be won by the team who could best take advantage of the roaring gales – the wind was barely noticeable by game time.

With such playing conditions an entertaining match seemed certain, and Rino’s took full advantage by getting off to a flyer. Following the kick-off O’Genski made his markers look foolish down the left flank before he flashed in an inviting ball which Pritchard nipped onto to get the slightest of touches. The keeper made the save and managed to block Martin’s follow up, but Ford was not to be denied his SECOND goal of the season and duly put Rino’s up 1-0 with less than a minute on the clock.

Surrey were stunned and continued to fall pray to Rino’s emphatic closing down and slick counter attacks. On one such case Pritchard laid in an inviting ball for the onrushing Martin who needed only one touch to audaciously (who writes this anyways?) chip the keeper. Rino’s held their 2-0 lead going into half time as nothing much of note occurred bar some interesting conversations between Bligh and Surrey’s main danger man. One can only hope the later invests in a thesaurus before the two teams next meet on December 11th as his arsenal of insults clearly failed to progress from Elementary School (not to say he did either) but ‘bastard child’ ‘bastard child’ needed work. At the very least he should probably Wikipedia Ireland to prove it really does exist, not that someone from Surrey should be so uncomfortable with accents anyways.

After the re-start Surry were gifted a fortunate penalty for handball, yet Thom wasn’t even made work as the Surrey midfielder dragged his spot-kick hopelessly wide. Surrey failed to engineer quality scoring chances and struggled to break down a resolute Rino’s backline. In fact it was Rino’s who could have added to their score as Surrey pushed more and more bodies forward. Martin was particularly wasteful after being sent through by Shih, yet despite doing all the hard work to initially steal the ball in midfield, he shot harmlessly at the keeper.

In the end it made little difference. Rino’s deservedly took all the points and notched up their third clean sheet of the year. Having now played all six teams from Cat ‘A,’ Rino’s sit in third spot, trailing only Westside and today’s opponents.
